Overcoming Procrastination

Procrastination is the habit of kings for they have hands that can do their bidding. For the rest, procrastination is deadly. It plays into the hands of time and who knows what time will do? We all need a little push now and then. If an artist underestimates his/her capabilities or goes too long without motifs, interest fades and motivation fails. If improving your painting abilities is a priority, then you have to set a goal for yourself and form a routine.

Have you ever heard this poem?

Stick to your task ’til it sticks to you;
Beginners are many, but enders are few.
Honour, power, place, and praise
Will come, in time, to the one who stays.
Stick to your task ’til it sticks to you;
Bend at it, sweat at it, smile at it too;
For out of the bend and the sweat and the smile
Will come life’s victories, after awhile.

Procrastination is a self-defeating behavior that can have a crippling effect on your art career or small business. Procrastinators often have a fear of failure, which as we know is rampant among artists. Use these tips to beat procrastination and start getting things done:

  • Busy and No Time: Find time. Avoid wasting time on non-productive activities and replace them with small doable art projects.
  • Not Motivated: Visit art galleries, read art related articles, find like-minded people and share your artwork with others in a group, join drawing classes, meet artists and remain positive!
  • Fear of Rejection: The worst thing an artist can do is compare himself to others. You are unique and your style is your own, be proud of it.
  • Boared: Change is the answer. Try different mediums, technologies, topics, methodologies and various subjects.
  • Lack of Skills: Attain relevant skills from artists, watch YouTube art channels and join art institutes.
  • No Incentive: When you finish a project, celebrate!

There’ll always be reasons or excuses that will take you away from painting…. don’t give into them!!
